DAY 1 - This morning, I'm thrilled to see blue sky from our lanai. Note that this is my first day shooting with the Canon 30D...a generous hand-me-down thanks to Henri, who recently upgraded to Canon's 5D
The pool area is surrounded by cabanas and palm trees
A waterslide wraps around a lavarock waterfall
Yesterday's rain convinced us to upgrade our reserved rental convertible to this all-wheel drive SUV. Today, we plan to drive to the northern tip of the island...
...but not before we hear the siren's call! Conveniently located nearby at the Queens' MarketPlace, we can stop at Starbucks before leaving Waikoloa each morning
We stop is Lapakahi State Historical Park, an archaeological site containing remains of a traditional Hawaiian fishing community
I'm not sure if these are actual ruins or reconstructions of the villagers' homes
Valerie stands just outside to give us a better sense of scale
Not much to look at inside
We follow the trail towards the ocean
We pass a structure closer to the shore
We spot a partially cloud covered Maui on the horizon
The village wraps around this little bay
This piece of driftwood reminds me of one of my ojiichan's paintings
I can't get a good picture of this hut because the sun is on the wrong side
We enjoy good weather now, but will our luck last with thunderheads like this just over the horizon?
The doorway to the hut
This is the beginning of the Humpback Whale migration season...and we're lucky to see a few off the coast
Upon recommendation from our hotel's concierge, we stop for lunch in the town of Hawi
Live Hawaiian music
Some of the buildings in this quaint town on the northern tip of the island look a little run down
We reach our lunch destination...Sushi Rock!
How often have you felt this way? In our case we could add "OR IN OUR LUGGAGE"
