Allegiant VR - Animation and VFX
I jumped into my first Unreal Engine 4 and first room scale VR project mid-production...a real trial by fire. My tasks involved creating a bunch of animation cycles and flight paths for the Bullfrog fighters (mainly to help draw the player's eye towards points of interest) and a more involved sequence involving a large transport. The player has the option to track or sabotage the transport, so I had to create two sequences for it.
I rigged the transport and came up with how it should move, created its materials including heat distortion particle effects. For the explosive alternative, I created all of the elements of its destruction including the debris and pyrotechnic effects. The key element was animating its flight path knowing the player would experience the sequence in VR. I really wanted the player to appreciate the size of the transport and feel an added sense of anxiety by making its debris and hulking mass nearly hit the player.
This particular rendering is from a 360 degree stereo capture of the project. I came up with the camera moves in Premiere Pro to highlight my contributions to the project.
